Clean Air Act of 1972 (CAA) (42 USC 7401 et seq.)

The purpose of this Act is to protect public health and welfare by the control of air pollution at its source, and to set forth primary and secondary National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) to establish criteria for States to attain, or maintain, these minimum standards. Section 118 (42 U.S.C. 7418) specifies that each department, agency, and instrumentality of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the Federal Government (1) having jurisdiction over any property or facility or (2) engaged in any activity resulting, or which may result, in the discharge of air pollutants, shall be subject to, and comply with, all Federal, State, interstate, and local requirements respecting the control and abatement of air pollution in the same manner, and to the same extent as any non-governmental entity. The NPS is responsible for protecting air quality within park boundries. The 1990 ammendments provided expanded authorities to the NPS to identify emissions sources and protect visibility in proximity to Calss 1 air quality parks.

Acid Precipitation Act of 1980 (PL 96-294; 42 USC 8901 et seq.)

The purpose of this act is "to identify the causes and sources of acid precipitation" and "to evaluate the environmental, social, and economic effects of acid precipitation." It calls for a comprehensive 10-year program to be implemented by the Interagency Acid Precipitation Task Force.
